Laura Bain-Selbo received her BA in Psychology from Purdue University in 1987 and her MA in Social Work at the University of Chicago in 1990. After starting her first job as a child and family therapist on the south side of Chicago, Laura took her first wheel throwing class at the University of Illinois at Chicago. In ceramics, Laura found her own therapy. Over the next 17 years, Laura continued her work with clay as a hobby.
In the years preceding her move to Bowling Green in 2007, Laura hit middle age and with it the proverbial crisis. This led to further art courses in wheel, hand building and sculpture at Lebanon Valley College in central Pennsylvania. Her love affair with clay reached new heights and her desire to turn her long time avocation into a vocation grew. Upon moving to Bowling Green, she asked herself "If not now, then when?"
Laura produces functional, decorative and sculptural work, combining wheel thrown and hand built components. Most unique are her fountains and oil lamps. Inspiration for Laura's work is varied. Her more serious sculptural works are often inspired by social justice issues, reflecting her social work background. Her fountains come from her observations of people and animals, infused with her quirky sense of humor. She’s excited to have found a niche in the Bowling Green art world and looks forward to continuing to grow as an artist. |
